Some weddings arrive exactly as planned. Others find a better version of themselves on the day.

Sandi and Ryan had spent months preparing for a farm wedding high in the Tutukaka hills — a spot Ryan's family had lovingly landscaped over six months, with views stretching out over the Northland coast. Then a tropical cyclone had other ideas. By 8:30am on the morning of the wedding, they were on Plan C: ceremony and reception moved down to the bay, guests ferried across the property by four-wheel drive, and a hillside left to wait for another day.

What didn't change was the feeling Sandi had always wanted — warm, relaxed, and beautiful in that effortless Northland way. Earthy tones, lush florals, the sound of the coast nearby. The kind of wedding where the bride arrives barefoot.

We set up the caravan on the driveway as the afternoon light softened over the bay. Guests came to us for canapés — pizzelle, bruschetta with basil pesto, fresh tomatoes and mozzarella, and beetroot and goat cheese arancini with garlic mayo — while the festoon lights came on one by one above us. For dinner, guests chose between ravioli filled with ricotta and smoked provolone in a rich tomato sauce, or hand-cut pappardelle with slow-cooked lamb ragù. Everything gluten free, everything made fresh in the caravan.

By the time the last bowl went out, the Amaranto sign was glowing gold against the evening sky and the bay had gone quiet. A last-minute change of plan, and a perfect night.
